Lotto America in D.C.
Washington D.C. became the 16th jurisdiction to participate in Lotto America when tickets went on sale ahead of the drawing on October 6, 2025. Here’s more information about how to play and how to claim.
How to Play in D.C.
The core game rules are the same in D.C. as everywhere else – you have to choose from numbers from 1 to 52 and a Star Ball from 1 to 10, adding the All Star Bonus for an extra $1 if you want to increase non-jackpot winnings. There are also a few rules that are specific to D.C.
- The minimum age to buy tickets is 18
- You can play the same numbers in up to 20 consecutive drawings
- Tickets must be bought before the cut-off time of 10:00 p.m. ET
- Lotto America is available to play online in D.C.
Claiming Prizes in D.C.
The claim process depends on the value of prizes, but keep in mind that you can only receive payouts from the DC Lottery if you purchased your tickets in D.C. Any tickets bought outside of the jurisdiction must be validated in the relevant state.
Prizes worth up to and including $600 – To claim your prize, simply take your winning ticket to an authorized retail location, or mail it in to the DC Lottery. If you play online, any prize of this value will be automatically deposited into your iLottery account.
Prizes worth more than $600 – Any win up to $5,000 can be claimed from Retailer Plus locations (stores which have special dispensation to pay out larger amounts), or by mail. Online wins up to $5,000 will also be paid directly into your iLottery account.
For any prize of this value, you’ll need a claim form, valid photo ID (such as a passport or driver’s license), your Social Security card and your signed winning ticket. The address for mail-in claims is shown below:

- The DC Lottery withholds taxes of up to 8.5 percent, in addition to federal taxes, on any prizes worth more than $5,000
- Information about prize winners is a matter of public record, but you can keep your name hidden by claiming through a trust or limited liability company (LLC)
Where Does the Money Go?
When you buy a lottery ticket in D.C., the revenue is split up and distributed several ways. Small percentages go to agent commissions, contractors’ fees and advertising, but the overwhelming majority is reserved for prize money or transfers to the General Fund.
More than $4.8 billion has been paid out in prize money since the DC Lottery’s inception in 1982, while $2.4 million has been contributed to the General Fund to support essential services such as education, recreation and parks, public safety, housing, senior, and child services.
