State Specific Rules

The core rules of Lotto America are the same in all participating states. You pick five numbers and a Star Ball and have to match your numbers with the winning line. There some rules that only apply to players in Idaho, however:

How to Claim

In Idaho, you have 180 days from the date of a drawing to claim your prize. The claim process depends on how much you won. Find out how to claim a prize of any value below.

Prizes worth up to and including $599 – To claim your prize, simply take your ticket to any one of over 1,200 licensed retailers in the state.

Prizes worth $600 or more – Visit the Idaho Lottery headquarters in person to claim your prize, or mail your ticket to lottery headquarters, along with a completed Claim Form and Addendum, as well as a government-issued photo identification, such as your driver’s license.

You must ensure you sign the back of the winning ticket and complete the Claim Form and Addendum correctly. If you don’t, they may be returned to you and you will not be able to claim until you have provided all the necessary information.

You are also advised to make a photocopy of the winning ticket and Claim Form before you mail them. Once you have gathered all the required documents, mail them to one of the addresses below. If you are mailing your documents overnight, use the overnight address.

P.O. Box 8687

You can contact the Idaho Lottery on 208-334-2600. Office hours are from 08:00 MT to 17:30 MT Monday through Friday, except for state and federal holidays, when the office is closed.

Taxes

Lottery winnings of more $600 than are treated as income in Idaho so are taxed accordingly. You will pay a federal tax rate of up to 25 percent on any prize over $5,000 at the point you are paid out. You may have to pay more – up to a total of 37 percent – when you file your returns, depending on the prize amount and your individual circumstances.

Prize money over $5,000 is also subject to a state tax of 7.4 percent, which will be taken at the point you are paid out. See the Tax Calculator to work out how much would be left with after deductions.

Where Does the Money Go?

Since its inception in 1989, the Idaho Lottery’s mission has been to support education in the state. As a result, any profits from the sale of lottery tickets go towards programs and initiatives designed to help schools, teachers, and students across the state. The lottery has contributed more than $800 million in this way to date.

Around 66 percent of the lottery’s revenue is used to pay prizes, and after costs and expenses have been covered, there is a 21 percent dividend left for good causes. This money can be used for a range of programs, and in the past it has funded everything from school security systems to bus lanes, as well as new facilities at the Idaho State University campus in Meridian.
