Where Does the Money Go?
Since its inception in 1989, the Idaho Lottery’s mission has been to support education in the state. As a result, any profits from the sale of lottery tickets go towards programs and initiatives designed to help schools, teachers, and students across the state. The lottery has contributed more than $800 million in this way to date.
Around 66 percent of the lottery’s revenue is used to pay prizes, and after costs and expenses have been covered, there is a 21 percent dividend left for good causes. This money can be used for a range of programs, and in the past it has funded everything from school security systems to bus lanes, as well as new facilities at the Idaho State University campus in Meridian.
