State-Specific Rules

The standard rules of Lotto America are the same in Montana as in every other participating state. You must select five main numbers from 1 to 52, plus a Star Ball between 1 and 10. However, the following rules are specific to playing in the Treasure State:

How to Claim

You must claim your prize within six months of the date of the drawing if you buy a winning ticket in Montana. The rules for how to claim depend on how much you have won.

Prizes under $600 - You can claim your money by visiting another licensed retailer or the Montana Lottery headquarters, or by submitting a claim by mail.

Prizes of $600 and over – You must complete a claim form for any win of this value, providing a valid form of photo identification such as your driver’s license, passport or state-issued ID card. You must submit your claim by mail or visit the lottery headquarters in Helena in person. The address of the headquarters is shown below:

Montana Lottery
2525 North Montana Avenue
Helena, MT 69601-0598
406-444-5825

Claiming prizes by mail – You can claim prizes of any value by mail. You just need to attach your winning ticket and claim form. For prizes of $600 or over, you must also include a copy of a valid form of photo ID. You are advised to use registered and/or certified mail. The mailing address is shown below:

Montana Lottery
P.O. Box 6073
Helena
MT 59604-6073

Claiming prizes as a lottery pool – Only one person can claim a prize, but if you have played as a pool and wish to share the money you can complete an IRS Form 5754. Everyone in your group will then be sent an individual W-2G form so the tax liability can be split between you.

Lotto America in Montana

State law in Montana requires that at least 45 percent of the money raised from ticket sales goes back to players in prizes. The remaining revenue is used to pay retailer commissions and cover the costs of operating games, but also helps to benefit the state in a number of ways.

Transfers are made to the General Fund every quarter to help support public education, safety and health programs. A portion of the revenue also goes towards providing scholarships for college and university students studying science, technology, engineering, math and healthcare (STEM) subjects. Ticket sales from Lotto America and other games have helped the Montana Lottery raise more than $250 million for the state since 1986.
